Pretoria grant recipients should know when their South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) funds will be paid out in October. SASSA provides grants and allowances to underprivileged people who need financial support. SASSA is responsible for providing social welfare to over 29 million South Africans. This statistic includes 4 million old-age pensioners, 13 million childcare recipients, 10 million Social Relief of Distress (SRD) claimants, and around 2 million disabled and war veterans. Here are the dates for October 2024.
- Older Persons Grants: Wednesday, October 2, 2024.
- Disability Grants: Thursday, October 3, 2024.
- Children’s grants: Friday, October 4, 2024.
SASSA beneficiaries can receive payments from select supermarkets, including Pick n Pay, Boxer, USave retailers, Checkers, and Shoprite, using their SASSA card, CashSend, or putting the funds straight into their bank account. The first week of the month is set aside for senior, child, and disability award payments.
Social Relief of Distress (SRD) award beneficiaries are selected, and all other grants are disbursed. Except for SRD users, all other beneficiaries can continue to collect at South African Post Office branches. Earlier this year, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana stated that permanent SASSA grants would be increased. Godongwana presented his 2024 budget speech to Parliament earlier this year. Permanent social payments are increased to keep up with inflation and improve access:
- An R100 increase in payments for the elderly, military veterans, people with disabilities, and those who require care. The sum will be divided into R90 in April and R10 in October. R50 and the child support grant by R20 will also increase the foster care grantbe by R20.
- The social alleviation of distress stipend will increase by R20, or 5.7%, beginning April 1.
Around 26 million South Africans receive social grants each year, at a total cost of R266 billion.
