Margaret McNamara, whose goal was to promote female equality and education, inspired the group. Margaret, the wife of the fifth President of the World Bank, used her position to advocate for these development program components. Margaret received the Medal of Honor, the highest civilian honor granted by the US, in recognition of her noteworthy achievements just before she passed away.

The MMEG Bursary 2024:

Female South African students can apply for bursaries through MMEG for the 2024–2025 academic year. The bursary is restricted to a few chosen universities. A female applicant is qualified for the bursary if she is a citizen of any nation listed on the MMEG Country Eligibility List. The MMEG grant aims to support women in developing countries in pursuing higher education and improving the lives of women and children in such countries. Women are specifically eligible for financial help and scholarships from MMEG, one of the few organizations.

The scholarship offers the following benefits:

  • Up to US$ 7,000 in funding (amounts may differ based on money availability).

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates must review the qualifying requirements before applying for the bursary. No exceptions should be made, or the application won’t be considered.

  • The applicant has to be a citizen of South Africa.
  • If the candidate is from another nation, they need a permit to study in South Africa.
  • The only students that can apply are female pupils.
  • The candidates had to be at least 25 years old by the deadline.
  • To pursue any of the following courses, the candidate must be enrolled:

  • A full-time or part-time program with at least two topics every term is required of the candidate.
  • After earning the bursary, the candidate needs to commit to studying for the entire semester.
  • One additional academic term of enrollment is required of the applicant.
  • The applicant cannot have any connection to any of the following:
    • The World Bank.
    • World Bank Organization.
    • Employee, retiree, board member, or spouse of the Inter-American Development Bank.

How to Apply?

  • Applications must be submitted electronically via MMEG Bursary Application 2025 (in the application’s first question, choose “South Africa program”).
  • Before logging in and applying, candidates must first establish an account.
  • In the space provided, when asked how you learned about the MMEG bursary, type “www.zabursaries.co.za.”

Documents Required:

The application form must have each of the papers above attached. If any papers are missing, the application won’t be considered.

  • Legitimate identification papers.
  • Passport, if you are an international student, with a picture.
  • The page includes the revised passport and permit for international students.
  • If the student is a dual citizen, the second passport with a photo.
  • Proof of a university student’s enrolment.
  • Transcripts and academic records.
  • Give a brief overview of your upbringing, education, experiences, goals, and commitment to helping women and children in developing countries.
  • Briefly summarize your thesis, outlining its goals, methodology, findings, and, if relevant, how they relate to your career goals. (If not applicable, explain how your academic pursuits connect to your long-term professional or volunteer goals.)
  • Two letters of recommendation
    • One recommendation letter from an academic instructor at your university and one character reference letter (which cannot be from a family member)
    • You must have been known by at least one of your referees for two semesters or equal time.
    • For the referees to be contacted and issued an email link from Embark Online to submit their recommendations, their email addresses must be included in the reference letters (you must have the approval of both references before putting forward their data).
    • If the individual is selected, Embark will get in touch with them. (If the person you referred has not heard from Embark by email, suggest that they check their spam folder, confirm that pop-up blockers are turned off, and write MMEG an email requesting a particular link.

Closing Date:

The application date is September 14, 2023. As no late applications will be allowed, candidates must finish the application before the deadline.
