CUT Status Check:
CUT (Central University of Technology) is South Africa’s heartland’s most prominent higher education institution. The Central University of Technology has two campuses: one in Bloemfontein, South Africa’s judicial capital, and another in Welkom, the Free State’s goldfields. The two campuses offer a variety of technological courses, including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), management sciences, humanities, and education.
The Central University of Technology is currently at the forefront of research and innovation, making it South Africa’s leader in the application of additive manufacturing (AM) for designing and fabricating bespoke medical implants. The university is well noted for its technology transfer research, which includes CRPM (Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing), PDTS (Product Development Technology Station), CAFSaB (Applied Food Security and Biotechnology Centre), SAMTI (Seda Agricultural Mining and Tooling Incubator), ULCS (Unit for Lean Construction and Sustainability), and Unit for Drug Discovery.
The institution holds a SARChI designation in the field of Medical Product Development via AM, as well as a Chair in AM Innovation and Commercialization funded by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI)/Manufacturing, Engineering, and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (merSETA).
Dr. Blade Nzimande, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, will also kick off the MEDADD at the Bloemfontein campus. This R71 million DSI-funded project will bring together the university’s center and industry to plan and invest resources collaboratively to develop the local medical device industry using AM technology and reduce the country’s reliance on expensive imported medical devices that local hospitals cannot afford. This represents only a modest portion of the university’s efforts in this field.
